Local Historian Carmel O'Tool will give a fascinating insight into how the discovery by employees of John
Hayes of Ballinaclash, the grandfather of Colonel Samuel Hayes of
Avondale, of the presence of lead ore in the townland of
Ballinafunshoge Glenmalure in 1726. Lead mining was subsequently
developed in Glenmalure, Glendalough and Glendasan and continued
sporadically until the 1950s.
