Sand Casting with Bronze

• Day 1:

  Greensand casting technique-

  Talk on sand casting safety, materials and uses .

  Demonstration on how to make a two piece sand mould, using benta mix sand.

  Participants begin to make their sand boxes.

  Casting in Aluminium using charcoal furnace and gas furnace.

  All sand boxes prepared in the morning are cast.

  Finish and clean up. Prepare sand and boxes for the next days casting.

  Day 2-

  Participants prepare their moulds for bronze pour in the afternoon.

  (Time permitting) Demonstration on smelting copper and tin to make bronze.

  Casting in bronze using gas furnace.

  All sand boxes that were prepared in the morning are cast.

  Finish and clean up of the sand casting area. Sand box moulds are cleaned and sand is stored.

  Day 3-

  Metal finishing workshop:

  Participants cut off gates and clean up their castings using files, and cold chisels. Metal chasing techniques demonstrated. Safe use of power tools will be demonstrated.

  Patina and finishes workshop:

  Basic patina finishes will demonstrated and participants will get to experiment with patina finishes.

  Talk on finishes and how to seal and preserve patinas.
